John A. Broadus (1827-1895) was the first professor of New Testament interpretation and homiletics at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the second president of the school. A profound preacher, Broadus previously served as pastor of the Baptist church in Charlottesville, VA. However, Broadus made his deepest mark at this institution, writing an important commentary, The Gospel of Matthew, as well as a premier homiletics text, On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons. In 1889, Broadus was invited to give the prestigious Beecher Lectures at Yale Divinity School.

The Broadus Papers includes sixteen boxes of correspondence as well as three boxes of manuscript notebooks. One treasure is the original manuscript of Broadus' classic On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons. In addition, there are several individually cataloged notebooks on various topics. The library also holds a copy of Eliza Broadus' "Memoirs" and a scrapbook of articles related to Dr. Broadus' death. Items were apparently received from several sources.
